People ask me how to start in OSINT. This talk by Jennifer Funk is a decent overview of the analyst career side. But you do not need Maltego or a clearance to start. You need Google Earth, patience, and the habit of writing down what you do NOT know)

Agree on the habit. The best analysts I've worked with are the ones comfortable writing "unknown" in a field instead of guessing.

Why I will not help you find where a soldier lives

After my geolocation post I got several DMs. Most were nice. Three asked the same thing: there is a video of a Russian soldier, can you find his home address, his family, his mother's page. One person wrote "you are Ukrainian, you should want this more than me". I understand the feeling. I have it too. My answer is still no, and here is why, so I do not have to write it in DMs again. 1. You will get the wrong person…

Дякую, Марто. People think it is a game when it is far away. When it is close, you see who really pays.

Also legally: in the EU, compiling and publishing a private person's home address is processing of personal data without a lawful basis under Art. 6 GDPR, and in Germany it can also be a criminal offence since 2021. Good intentions are not a legal basis.

Six checks before you share war video (I do them every time, also for my side)

Last week in one of my Ukrainian Telegram chats somebody shared a video with caption about a "new" strike. I knew the building. It was from 2022, I verified it myself back then. Forty people had already forwarded it. Nobody was lying on purpose, they were just angry and fast. So here are the six checks I do, every time, in this order. Takes 5-15 minutes. If you do not have 5 minutes, you do not have time to share it…

Arma 3 point is so true. My uncle sent me "Ukrainian air defence" video, it was literally the game, with HUD visible in corner. He is 64, he still does not believe me

Welcome to Wars, Votes and Wires. Please read before posting

Hi all. I made this topic because war and politics threads kept appearing in other places, in a Postgres question, in a remote work post, under a meme, and every time it became a mess. But I also do not think we can pretend tech is separate. Sanctions decide who can use npm. Shutdowns decide who can talk to their clients. Cheap drones changed what a "hardware hobbyist" is. Chips are geopolitics now. So here is a…

Geolocating a photo with free tools: how I actually do it

Few people asked me after a chat discussion how I find where photo was taken. There is no magic and no secret software. It is mostly patience and writing down what you checked. Here is my real process, the same one I use for war footage, but please practice on your own city first. Not on people. Step 0: is it even new? Before geolocation, I check if the picture already exists online. Most "new" war photos I see in…

Very good writeup ! The "sort by oldest" button catches most recycled fakes in my experience. One add: Yandex is great for buildings but think before you upload a photo with faces in it. Bref, saving this.
