Going from CRUD backend to payments: things I wish someone told me

4 years back I was writing CRUD APIs for a food delivery startup. Then I joined a lending company, and in the first month I broke a reconciliation job, learned what a UTR is, and realised I did not know what a debit was. Writing this for anyone thinking about moving into fintech backend. Learn basic accounting before anything else. Not the full course. Just double entry, what assets and liabilities are, and why a…

It turned my projects from loss making to boring, and boring is the dream. 1. The…

  5. Question

got 34 comments on my first big PR and i kinda want to crawl into a hole

so i finally got my first real feature (a filters panel for our admin dashboard) and opened the PR today. 34 comments. thirty four. some are tiny like naming, some are "this should be a custom hook", and one just says "lets talk about this" which sounds terrifying my senior is nice and none of the comments are mean. but i kind of feel like a fraud and now everyone can see it. in the kitchen if you messed up the chef…

How to ask for help at your first dev job (the template I give my mentees)

Every weekend I mentor bootcamp graduates, and the number one thing that decides how fast they grow at their first job is not React or Python. It is how they ask for help. Some ask too early and never build the muscle. Most ask too late, after two days of silent suffering, because they are scared to look stupid. So here is the rule and the template I give them. Kindly steal it. The rule: 45 minutes, then ask…
