Hamish got me onto this. Two cheap LoRa boards running Meshtastic, one in the shed, one in the ute: 6.8 km before it dropped out, with a hill in the way. No SIM, no internet, no subscription. Putting one on the roof next weekend, will report back πŸ”§

Antenna is half of the range. Stock antenna on cheap board often tuned for wrong band. If you have NanoVNA, check SWR around 915. Good antenna cost 5 USD and give you more than any setting.

Ham guy here. Line of sight is everything at these frequencies, height beats power every time. Get that node up high and you'll be amazed. my 2 cents

I printed cases for two of these last month! (Leave a hole for the antenna connector, not a slot you plan to drill later (the drill wins, the case loses).)

Yep mate, 915 to 928 MHz is licence free here under the class licence as long as you stay within the power limits. Set the region to ANZ in the app and it sorts the frequencies for you. Grab two boards and we'll test from your place to mine one day
