may: $31,060 MRR (+$1,650). the onboarding fix worked, the dog did not help

shopify onboarding, a scary price change starting june 1, and 200 cold emails that went nowhere

may numbers. short version: up $1,650, mostly from fixing something boring.

by product

  • invoice PDF API: $17,890 (+$650). churn 2.7%
  • shopify order tagging: $10,880 (+$1,010). churn 3.8%
  • uptime monitor: $2,290 (-$10). churn 3.1%

total $31,060, april was $29,410.

what worked: the onboarding fix

last month i said 40% of shopify installs never finish setup. i watched 12 session recordings (with the merchants' permission, i asked). every single one got stuck on the same screen: "create your first tagging rule". empty form, 6 fields, no example.

fix: when you install, you get 3 rules already created and switched off. "tag orders over $200 as VIP", "tag orders with a discount code", "tag international orders". you flip one on. done.

setup completion went from 60% to 74%. that's most of the +$1,010.

i built the whole thing in 4 days with claude code and cursor. before AI this would have been 2-3 weeks for me. i keep saying AI 10x'd me and i keep meaning it.

what flopped

  1. 200 cold emails to small agencies offering the PDF API for client invoices. 4 replies. 1 of them was "UNSUBSCRIBE" in all caps. 0 customers.
  2. i wrote a "PDF API vs building it yourself" comparison page. 31 visits. one was me checking it on my phone.

the scary part

starting june 1 the starter plan on the PDF API goes from $19 to $29 for new signups. everyone already paying keeps $19 forever. i have been scared of this for a year. results next month, good or bad.

money out was about the same as april, except refunds dropped to $120. biscuit is fine. biscuit is always fine.

Genuine question about "4 days, would have been 2-3 weeks". Did you estimate the 2-3 weeks before you started, or after you finished?

Vibes are allowed. They are just not a unit.

Grandfathering the old customers at $19 is a very clean move. Nobody will shout. The new people never saw $19 so they cannot miss it

The 3 pre-made rules switched off. This is so simple I am angry I never did it for our admin panels. Empty forms are where users go to die

Asking permission before watching session recordings deserves a mention. Most companies do not.

felt weird not to. also when you ask, 3 of them got on a call with me and that was worth more than the recordings

UNSUBSCRIBE in all caps is the only cold email reply i have ever respected

Ate Jo, does the price increase apply to people already in trial? Asking for a video about pricing for my viewers
