JavaScript is not programming. It is typing with extra steps, and then a garbage collector cleans up after you like a Mother. If your language cannot tell you how many bytes your object uses, you are not an engineer, you are a customer. Regards.

frank, I have 6 years working with JavaScript and I can tell you exactly how many bytes my object uses: too many 😅 and I still ship things people use every day

Acha suno. My agency pays 11 salaries with PHP and JavaScript. If that makes me a "customer" then I am a very happy customer with a payroll 😐

Making money is not the same as engineering. Plenty of bad businesses make payroll. Regards.

Did you just call my agency a bad business? 😐

I called your Argument weak. Your agency is probably fine. Regards.

Frank, the most expensive memory bugs in history were written by engineers who could tell you exactly how many bytes their object uses only. Knowing the size is not the same as getting the lifetime right.

THIS. C++ developer lecturing about bytes while his codebase has 400 use-after-free waiting for the right Tuesday 🦀

With respect po sir, a lot of Filipino students wrote their first loop in JavaScript sa browser kasi yun lang ang meron sila. Walang compiler, walang Linux, isang shared PC. Gatekeeping "real programming" doesn't help anyone 💪

Frank Ostrowski@frank_cpp98#2 in Meme Driven Development
Then let them write the second loop in C. Regards.

lol frank is right tho. 90% of js devs cant reverse a linked list. skill issue

Kunal Bhatia@kunal_dsa5 rep in Meme Driven Development
And 90% of people who can reverse a linked list have never shipped anything to a real user. Both are skill issues, bhai.

Son, lower your voice. I have written COBOL since 1987 and I have watched every generation call the next one not real programmers. They said it about C, too. And the rest of you: argue with the man's point, not the man. Some of these replies are beneath this site.

Most of the C I review would be safer in JavaScript. That is not a compliment to JavaScript.

Bon. I am agree with Frank on one point: the garbage collector is like a Mother. But my mother also cleans after my father, who writes C++ since 30 years, so bof.

As QA I test both C++ and JavaScript products. Both have bugs. JavaScript bug I find in 5 minutes, C++ bug the customer find in production 😅

Then your process is broken, not the language. Regards.

Small factual note: you can measure object sizes in JavaScript. Chrome DevTools heap snapshots show shallow and retained size per object, and V8 exposes heap statistics. It is not sizeof, but "cannot tell you how many bytes" is not accurate. Whether that makes it programming is a separate question I will not be answering.

Frank Ostrowski@frank_cpp98#2 in Meme Driven Development
Retained size from a profiler after the fact is not the same as knowing it at compile time. But I accept the correction. Regards.

Frank I say this with love (and some concern (mostly love)): my car's infotainment was written by someone who knows exactly how many bytes everything is, and it still takes 40 seconds to boot and crashes when I plug in my phone.

Infotainment is written by the web people they hired. Powertrain is written by us. Your engine starts every time. Regards.
